Dóttir mín fór í sína árlegu Bandaríkjaferð í dag.

Þangað hefur hún farið á hverju ári að heimsækja fólk sem hún kynntist þegar þær mæðgur voru í námi rétt hjá Boston í nokkur ár.

Hún hefur jafnan nýtt ferðina til fatakaupa og fór nú með sumarhýruna í vasanum.

Á leiðinni í skólann í morgun sagði hún mér að hún gerði sér grein fyrir því að hún væri að fara að eyða dálítið miklum peningum í ferðinni, en sjálfri sér til varnar vildi hún taka fram:

1. Að hún gernýtti þau föt sem hún keypti sér þarna - þetta væru fötin sem hún væri í allt árið.
2. Að hún ætlaði að kaupa Numbers, seríu 4 á DVD handa mér í afmælisgjöf.
3. Að hún hefði gengisvarið sig með því að kaupa dollara jafnt og þétt í allt sumar - og væri því að fara á útsölur.

Við búum sem sagt í landi þar sem 15 ára stelpur eru að spá í gjaldeyrisvarnir.

Svo maður vitni (staðfært) í listamanninn nafnlausa.

1999 var fínt ár. Að vísu var fjárfestingarbóla í netheimum að ná hámarki, en munurinn á núinu og þá var að í flestum tilfellum var verið að veðja á einhverja sem voru að búa eitthvað til. Í mörgum tilfellum var um óraunhæfar væntingar að ræða - en í öðrum tilfellum ekki. Fyrirtæki og hugmyndir sem unnið var að á þessum tíma hafa mörg hver malað gull síðan.

Á tíunda áratugnum var fjármálaheimurinn ennþá hugsaður sem stoð hinna raunverulegu atvinnuvega. Hlutverk hans var að miðla fé frá þeim sem áttu það til þeirra sem þurftu það og innheimta hóflegar rentur fyrir.

Það má alltaf deila um það hvað hóflegar rentur eru, en í upphafi tíunda áratugarins tók fjármálageirinn til sín tíund - ef mælikvarðinn er hlutfall af heildarhagnaði fyrirtækja.

Í upphafi þessarar aldar varð fjandinn laus. Fjármálageirinn gleymdi rótum sínum og margir vildu trúa því að hann hefði öðlast sjálfstætt líf. Renturnar margfölduðust og náðu hæstu hæðum í tæpum þriðjungi hagnaðar fyrirtækja almennt.

Í raunveruleikanum þýddi þetta ekkert annað en aukna skattheimtu á fyrirtækin, sem bættist við tekjuskatt til ríkis, því hagnaður fjármálageirans getur ekki annað en verið greiddur af notendum þjónustunnar; fyrirtækjum og einstaklingum.

Fjármálageirinn var sem sagt farinn að innheimta ríflegan virðisaukaskatt af fyrirtækjum heimsins, til viðbótar við aðra skatta ríkis og sveitarfélaga.

Lækkun skatta hins opinbera var þannig mætt með hækkandi rentum fjármálageirans - og gott betur.

Það hefði því ekki átt að koma neinum á óvart að þetta módel gengi ekki upp til lengdar, jafnvel þótt ekki hefði komið til óreiða og mikið magn af tilbúnu fé sem fékkst lánað á vildarkjörum.

Jafn augljóst ætti því að vera að núverandi fjármálakerfi mun ekki ná að koma fótunum undir sig aftur, því umfang þess og rentur þurfa að lækka verulega - í raun niður í þriðjung af því sem það var á árunum 2005-2006.

Fjármálageirinn þarf nú að sníða sér stakk eftir vexti og þörfum atvinnulífs, þeirra sem búa til raunveruleg verðmæti. Við það þurfa allar björgunaraðgerðir og skipulag að miðast.

Konan mín þarf að vera á fundi í Brussel í fyrramálið. Af því tilefni fór hún með flugi Icelandair til Amsterdam í morgun og ætlaði að taka lestina þaðan til Brussel.

Vélin bilaði á leiðinni og þurfti að nauðlenda í Glasgow. Fyrirgefðu, Guðjón, "öryggislenda" heitir það víst á PR máli Icelandair (en ekki á mannamáli því sem notað var við farþega).

Svosum ekkert að því, flugvélar bila og ágætt til þess að vita að menn haldi ekki bara áfram flugi ef annar hreyflanna fer að titra.

En hvernig þetta lið bregst við, það er nú önnur saga.

Gaui Arngríms segir:

"að farþegum vélarinnar verði flogið til Amsterdam eða á þá áfangastaði sem þeir voru á leið til, með öðrum flugfélögum. Þeir sem bíða eftir flugi til Íslands frá Amsterdam í Hollandi verður flogið með öðrum flugfélögum, hvort heldur sem þeir eru á leið til Norður-Ameríku eða til Íslands, þá annað hvort í gegnum London eða Kaupmannahöfn.

Segist Guðjón vonast til þess að hægt verði að koma öllum farþegunum á sína áfangastaði í dag."

Í raunveruleikanum er staðan hins vegar svona:

1. Það er ein manneskja í hlutastarfi við að afgreiða farþegana. Þeir bíða allir í röð sem hreyfist lítt. Það eru fá flug eftir frá Glasgow í dag og ljóst að þetta fólk er ekki að fara neitt.
2. Þeim hefur verið sagt að vonandi verði hægt að koma einhverjum til Amsterdam á morgun, í síðasta lagi á laugardag - en ef þeir vilji fara heim aftur þá komist þeir á sunnudag.
3. Icelandair setur þá sem hringja heim á hold - spilar fyrir þá lyftumússík í 30 sekúndur og slítur svo símtalið. Ef kvartað er undan því er svarið: "Já, veistu, það er bara svakalega mikið að gera."
4. Gaui svarar ekki í gemsann.

Konan mín flúði, við fundum lest frá Glasgow til London - og þaðan áfram til Brussel í býtið í fyrramálið. Hún verður bara að sofa í lestunum, greyið.

Ef ég væri að reka flugfélag myndi ég hafa viðbragðsáætlunina svona:

1. Réttið upp hend þeir sem vilja bara fara á hótel og bíða eftir að við hringjum í þá. Við reddum ykkur áfram á morgun.
2. Taka niður nöfn og gemsanúmer, útdeila voucherum, senda fólkið burt.
3. Díla við þau 30% sem eftir standa.

Nú myndi maður ætla að Icelandair gæti amk. séð til þess að það komi flugvél á þeirra vegum innan 24 stunda að redda þessu. Hef það fyrir satt að þeir eigi nokkrar vélar og jafnframt að út um alla Evrópu séu flugvélar til leigu, t.d. floti XL Leisure.

En nei.

Okkur skötuhjúunum finnst það síðan grátlega fyndið að þegar við vorum að finna bestu leiðina til að komast þetta þá slepptum við Iceland Express út vegna tíðra seinkana og vesens undanfarið.

This weekend we won the Icelandic Sailing Championship - by a fairly good margin. We won 3 out of 5 races, placed second in one and 6th in one, which we could drop.

You get one point for 1st, 2 points for second etc. so we won with 5 points. The crew in second place got 10 points and third place went to a crew with 15 points, so overall we did really well.

This summer we've managed to win the Reykjavik Cup (a weekly friendly race series), even though there are 4 rounds to go, and we're currently in second place in the Icelandic Cup, a series of larger races, with one race to go. We only need to place better than the boat currently in first place to win, as we've amassed more than enough points to keep ahead of the boat in third place.
